The Maternal and Child Health/Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MCH/LEND) program at the Center for Excellence in Disabilities at West Virginia University prepares graduate trainees to provide family-centered, culturally competent and interdisciplinary care to children with neuro-developmental and related disabilities and their families. Mentors from psychology, social work, speech pathology, neurology, pediatrics, public administration, audiology, dentistry, physical and occupational therapy work with trainees to help prepare them for a leadership role in providing excellent care to these families. LEAD utilizes training forums including (1) Orientation; (2) The Core Cours; (3) The Professional Development Seminar; (4) The Interdisciplinary Clinical Experiences; (5) Leadership Enhancement Experiences; (6) The Family Partnership Program; (7) Mentoring; and, (8) The Interdisciplinary Research Group. GOALS and OBJECTIVES: The goal of LEAD Project is to develop and educate clinically competent leaders, skilled in the interdisciplinary process who can: (1) improve the health of children by exercising their knowledge and skills to develop comprehensive, compassionate, family-centered systems of care; (2) Secure societal reforms that will enhance and protect the health status of infants, children and adolescents with, or at risk for, neurodevelopmental and related disabilities; and, (3) improve the quality of and reduce the cost of health care by forging community-based partnerships.
