ACS RTC History of Leadership in Developmental Disabilities: A Wiki Project
Project Description:
This project grew out of leadership seminar in which emerging leaders in disabilities fields were introduced to exemplary leaders of the past. The two-hour multimedia "History of Leadership" lesson provided a valuable beginning for the exploration of the role of leadership and leaders in creating the ideas, movements, and programs that have been a foundation to the developmental disabilities field. Numerous requests were received to make the history lesson available to a much broader audience as Web-based content. Upon reflection an expanded opportunity to develop a "living" course on the history of leadership was conceived. This living course was proposed to the Mentor Foundation to allow maximum opportunities for learners to explore in greater depth the personalities, ideas, and programs described in the core course, to engage as many knowledgeable and interested experts as possible in the process of expanding the multimedia content of the history course, to provide for both direct learning and discussion of the content of the history course, to use the highest quality Web-based applications to maximize access to and benefit of the history course, and finally to recognize and adopt the evolving interest in multi-source generation and organization of knowledge, specifically recognized in the various Wiki applications currently in use.
This project uses a moderated Wiki approach with restrictions placed on the traditional opportunity for multiple authors to create and delete pages in an ad hoc manner, and to ensure review of entries before they are posted publicly. This project exploits the important, but transitory, opportunities to obtain and share the knowledge and experience of veteran members of the developmental disabilities field who possess important information, insight, and resources that may be lost with impending retirements.
