HEALTH; Toward Healthcare Parity for Persons with Disabilities
Project Description:
Alarming health disparities exist for people with disabilities, and these are exacerbated by the continued barriers to access despite the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) over two decades ago. Our goal is to improve the healthcare provided to people with disabilities by training healthcare providers about the needs of patients with disabilities and improving their attitudes towards this underserved population. The three linked activities (Education of Medical Students at University of South Florida, Education of Medical Students at the Ohio State University, and Disability Continuing Education for Healthcare Providers) aim to transform the perceptions that health care providers have of people with disabilities. This will improve the healthcare that is provided into a positive, personal, and cooperative relationship between provider and patient.
