Project Description:
The intent of this IES Goal 5 project in the Special Education Systems, Finance, and Policies topic area is to develop and validate the proposed Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) for Children, which is designed to assess the support needs of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities ages 5 to 15 years. Intellectual disability is currently conceptualized as a multidimensional state of human functioning in relation to environmental demands. An instrument that assesses an individuals support needs would be helpful in identifying the supports needed for the individual to participate actively in preferred life activities. Supports can be defined as resources and strategies that aim to promote the development, education, interests, and personal well-being of a person and that enhance individual functioning (Luckasson et al., 2002). People with intellectual disability require the provision of ongoing patterns of support to participate in typical life activities in mainstream settings. We propose to develop and validate an instrument that measures childrens support needs.
