Autism and Related Disabilities System of Care
Project Description:
Problem: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) affect the health and well-being of approximately 1 in 100 children and their families; systematic intervention begun before 4 years of age improves outcomes. In Florida and across the US, however, systems of care are not organized to provide early identification and treatment, in part because health and education professionals lack sufficient training in ASDs and related neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD).
Goals: (1) To improve the statewide system of care for individuals with ASD and related NDD (2) To increase the number of interdisciplinary leaders qualified to provide family-centered, culturally competent services to children with ASDs and related NDD; (3) To increase the number of leaders who can use research in practice and in advancing knowledge; (4) To increase the number of leaders who can evaluate and develop policies that affects system of care; (5) To educate health care professionals currently working with children with ASDs.
The Mailman Center works with at least 90 community partners, including FloridaÂs Title V agency, autism education programs through public and private schools, the Miami Institute for Human Genetics, and CARDÂan agency funded by the state of Florida to disseminate information on ASDs.
