Project Description:
The purpose of the proposed pilot study is to gather preliminary information on eating patterns, eating behaviors, and parent feeding practices of children with ADHD ages 6-11, compared to typically developing children of the same age. We will recruit a total of thirty (30) children ages 6-11; 10 of the children will have ADHD who are currently being treated with stimulant medication; 10 of the children will have ADHD who have not been treated with stimulant medication for 3 months or more (because stimulants have the potential to influence appetite and weight), and 10 of the children without ADHD will serve as comparison subjects. The specific aims of the proposed pilot study are as follows: 1. To compare the dietary patterns, eating behaviors, mealtime behaviors, and parent feeding practices in children with and without ADHD: a.Dietary patterns consist of the frequency of consumption of high-calorie/low nutrient-dense foods, as measured by a Food Frequency Questionnaire b. Eating behaviors consist of satiety responsiveness, slowness in eating, fussiness, and emotional over-eating, as measured by the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire c. Parent feeding practices include parent control around feeding, child control, use of food as a reward, parent modeling, parent restriction, and pressure to eat, as measured by the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire and the Child Feeding Questionnaire d. Mealtime behaviors include family mealtime environment, behavioral problems at mealtimes, and the influence of the childs eating on family members, as measured by the Meals In Our Household Questionnaire.
