Project Description:
Partners for Inclusive Communities (Partners) is addressing the critical problem of rape, sexual abuse, and violence toward people with disabilities through the ?Safety and Sexual Violence Prevention Project?. The goal is to ?Promote the safety of people with disabilities by building capacity, providing training and technical assistance, and developing a more comprehensive systems approach to addressing environments, policies and procedures, culture and attitudes that support or condone sexual violence against people with disabilities. This project emphasizes primary prevention activities through information dissemination and training for people with disabilities, families of children with disabilities, professionals and other interested individuals who act on behalf of persons with disabilities. Focusing on empowering individuals with disabilities, their advocates and their families is consistent with the movement in the field of disabilities toward self-direction. It is also consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s (CDC) public health approach to injury and violence prevention. The major activities of this project propose to prevent the initial occurrence of violence; to educate on factors that put people with disabilities at risk by providing information related to healthy relationships/boundaries both to staff in programs that work with people with disabilities and to people with disabilities (self advocates). The Safety and Sexual Violence Prevention Project works in conjunction with several other commission funded projects, providers of services to people with disabilities and with self advocates.
