ADA Training for State Employees
Project Description:
The IHDD will work in collaboration with the GSFIC to develop, deliver, and evaluate training courses for designated State of Georgia employees related to the ADA and current best practices in serving Georgia?s citizens with disabilities. The specific content of the training will be determined by the review and/or development of needs assessment surveys and focus groups with state employees, but it is anticipated that topics will include 1) history and purpose of the ADA; 2) basic components of the ADA, with specific regard to Title II; 3) Respectful language and interaction with people with disabilities and comfort in interacting with citizens with a variety of abilities and communication styles, and; 4) available resources.
Disability will be presented as diversity, and the training will promote a strengths-based perspective of people with disabilities. Because many state employees may be uninformed of the ADA, feel unsure of their capacity to effectively serve people with disabilities, or experience a level of discomfort in interacting with people with disabilities, care will be taken to structure the needs assessments and training to promote feelings of comfort and competence among participants in a warm and supportive training environment. It will promote communication and collaboration between state agencies and departments, in keeping with the Team Georgia approach to service.
