Project Description:
The College of Direct Support (CDS) is a Web-based, interactive, multi-media program for training direct support professionals, supervisors and managers to provide person-centered community supports to persons with disabilities. It has been developed through a partnership between the Institute's Research and Training Center on Community Living (RTC/CL) and Elsevier. CDS uses the latest technology, evidence-based practices, guidance from a National Advisory Board of representatives of major national organizations, and a National Board of Editors of content and training experts, to offer competency-based training built around comprehensive job analysis and to support learners in developing and demonstrating the skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide high quality support to persons with disabilities. During 2011/2012 CDS became part of a new, expanded suite of online training offered by a collaboration between the RTC/CL and Elsevier titled Direct Course. DirectCourse includes CDS and 3 other online training curricula for professionals who support people who have intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; those with psychiatric disabilities; as well as those who are aging. The other partner universities in DirectCourse are the Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Research and Training Center for Personal Assistance Services at the University of California San Francisco, and the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities.
