Transition: Building Adult Systems of Care
Project Description:
The Mailman Center for Child Development (MCCD) has provided interdisciplinary leadership training in neurodevelopmental disabilities to hundreds of professionals over the last 40 years.
Although our child-oriented trainees have demonstrated competence in transition issues, families and youth with ASD/NDD find that there are very few adult providers, particularly in medicine and dentistry, who have the knowledge and skills to assume care for adults with ASD/NDD. As a first step in building the workforce for adults with autism and NDD, we will extend some aspects of our LEND training to residents in internal medicine, psychiatry, and family medicine as well as students in dentistry. We believe that this is justified because part of caring for youth with ASD/NDD is transferring their care to qualified adult providers, and because engaging with our adult colleagues will help us understand the needs of adults with ASD/NDD and therefore help us design better care for infants and children with ASD/NDD (life course perspective). Furthermore, most of these short-term trainees will provide some care to children, and our goal is that each year at least one trainee from each group will become interested enough in ASD/NDD to become long-term LEND trainees. Short-term training will require (1) successful completion of selected components of the web-based curriculum; (2) at least 2 hours of LEND faculty didactic presentations (e.g. grand rounds); and (3) incorporation of LEND principles into selected clinical experiences. To ensure the last of these requirements, designated faculty from each of the 4 disciplines will participate in Mailman Center faculty development sessions designed to improve clinical training in leadership, (FCC), interdisciplinary teaming, cultural effectiveness, SD/LCP, and ASD. Long-term trainees will complete the same curriculum as pediatric residents (Appendix X) and will chose an advocacy project related to their specific career goals in caring for youth and adults with ASD/NDD.
