Project Description:
Description of research: a qualitative examination of the meanings of care and ways of living for African American family members caring for their child with autism. This pilot study was a naturalistic study of family members that included field notes and interviews of family members in their naturalistic settings such as home, therapies, and clinic over an 8 month period. Findings included traditional autism psychosocial interventions were not effective in this culture and independence in self care was the most important meaning of caring for a child with autism.
