Project

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevention or Diagnosis and Intervention

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2011
Contact Information:
Project Description:
In collaboration with the Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Pulaski County Juvenile Courts, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences evaluation team, this project screens, and when indicated, evaluates for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) all children under the age of six who live in Pulaski County and are entering foster care. Those who are diagnosed with FASD receive individualized interventions. Partners provides training about FASD, strategies for supporting behaviors, and approaches to education to DCFS, Juvenile Court workers and others involved with the children, such as foster parents, teachers, and early childhood workers. Partners also evaluates the outcomes of the project. This is the first project in the state of Arkansas that focuses on FASD. It is expected that approximately 24-36 children will be diagnosed with an FASD each year. As a result of the project, the staff members expect better child outcomes and greater stability in terms of family placements. The collaborating agencies expect they will be able to replicate the program into other areas of the state.
