Health Careers Taining Program Grant-- Exploring Careers Working with Special Needs Children
Project Description:
This program is designed to assist undergraduate students from under-represented and disadvantaged groups to explore careers in the field of Maternal Child Health and neuro-developmental disabilities. The long-term goal is to assist students interested in this career trajectory to apply for and be admitted to graduate programs in health-related fields, by providing these advanced practice skills: management and development of programs for this population, conducting research, shaping policy in the field, and/or joining the academic/research faculty of universities in California and in the US.
Job talks will be provided to undergraduate students in the CSULA College of Health and Human Sciences and in Pre-Med (biology in the College of Natural and Social Sciences) by ID teams of professionals or graduate students who work with special needs populations (UCEDD, CHLA, CSULA). Each quarter, 10-15 students will be selected to participate in a 4 unit independent study which provides them with information on neurodevelopmental disabilities, issues in the DD field, systems of care, and racial disparities in access to DD services and related systems, observations of ID teams in action at UCEDD/CHLA, and community agencies such as regional centers, Disability Rights CA, Fiesta Educativa, various parent groups and/or family resource centers and self-advocacy groups.
