Project Description:
Need: The lack of integrated behavioral and mental health services within the healthcare system is significant and well documented at local, regional and national levels. There is a shortage of professionals who can provide culturally competent, effective mental health services to underserved populations, such as children, the chronically ill, victims of abuse, or individuals with disabilities, who reside in medically underserved areas. Goals & Objectives: Enhance the USC UCEDD's APA-accredited Child and Pediatric Psychology Internship and Fellowship by: emphasizing the impact of cultural, social, and environmental factors on the needs of children with special health care needs, and how these factors impact access to appropriate health care services. 1) Infuse training on cultural competence and interdisciplinary work in primary care clinics at CHLA (AltaMed General Pediatrics and the Adolescent Medicine Teenage Health Center. 2) continuing enhancement of the cross-cultural competence of the USC UCEDD service delivery system, particularly as it impacts mental health care and neurodevelopmental disabilities. 3) enhance training in the use of effective evidence-based practices that best address the mental health needs of the children we serve. Unusual Features: A consultation model will be used, by which a master clinicians/researchers will provide ongoing teaching, supervision, and consultations to the assessment and intervention programs throughout the internship and fellowship training. The focus of training in evidence-based practices will be exposure and practice of the Incredible Years group program, Parent Child Interaction Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
