Project Description:
?AZ Community Living NOW? will address the DDPC?s area of emphasis goal #1 of increasing opportunity and choice in housing for individual with DD and their families through a comprehensive education program on Arizona options for affordable and accessible housing. (Objective 2). Too many times, individuals with DD and their families believe the only options they have are agency supported residential services or living at home. The Sonoran UCEDD will challenge families to think creatively as they learn about current options and ideas for community living. We will develop a 6 part educational training program series on housing and related issues for individuals with DD and their families throughout the State of Arizona. This 6 part series will be delivered via videoconferencing in 5 targeted communities (Maricopa County, Pima County, Cochise County, Yuma County and Coconino County) and will then be condensed into web-based modules on an ?Arizona Community Living NOW? website which will be developed. The educational sessions and web site will cover the following subject matter crucial to individuals and families contemplating community living options: 1. What?s available? Looking at community services and supports including socialserve.com; 2. Transitions from home to independent living ? addressing the legal, social and emotional issues with an emphasis on aging families; 3. Ready to Rent ? what you need to know as a renter; 4. Shared Living ? how to find a compatible roommate/shared living situation; co-housing; cooperatives, joint home ownership; 5. Ready to buy ? addressing the needs of first time home buyers; and 6. Financial education ? making community living successful.
