Project

LEND Metabolomic Profiling of Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder 1-year award to study metabolites in the urine of children with ASD...

Project Description:
The overall goal is to determine metabolite markers in urine that characterize individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Metabolites unique to ASD could inform us about how the body works differently in ASD. Cutting edge liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometry technologies will be used to identify the specific pattern of metabolites in 200 children with ASD compared to the urine from 200 same-aged and sibling controls. This better understanding of underlying differences in the body functions of individuals with autism will be able to help create treatments targeted to these body functions. A unique profile of metabolites in the urine of individuals with ASD, if found, could also be used as an easy screening method for ASD.
