Comprehensive Plan for Culturally Competent, Interdisciplinary Service Delivery to Minority Children, Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities

Hampton University has received funding from the Administration on developmental Disabilities for its educator/clinicians and administrators, supported by Norfolk State University clinical faculty and a cadre of consultants,to design, maintain, and evaluate a Family Support Access Expansion Center in the Tidewater Region of Virginia which is culturally competent, family-directed, and community-based.
The proposed Family Support Access Expansion Center (FSAEC) will reflect an interdisciplinary approach to meeting the needs of African American preschool children with developmental disabilities and their families and will also provide extensive opportunities to educate and train pre-professional students representing the next generation of service providers, administrators, and policy-makers.
The Nebraska UCEDD in collaboration with Hampton University and Norfolk State University will provide a 2-3 day interdisciplinary training institute on pre-school education for children with disabilities in the summer while students are in Nebraska as part of their pre-professional training. In addition, UCEDD faculty will evaluate the FSAEC and provide ongoing technical support and training using two-way teleconferencing.
