Arkansas Cancer Coalition Grant
Project Description:
The Arkansas Disability and Health Program (ADHP) at Partners for Inclusive Communities, a program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, has been working to promote the health of Arkansans with disabilities and prevent secondary conditions since 2001. Through funding from the Arkansas Cancer Coalition, ADHP will pursue one goal ? Chapter 5 Disparities Goal A. Reduce Cancer Control Disparities. The Arkansas Disability and Health Program will provide training and individualized technical assistance regarding the preparation of women with developmental disabilities for breast and cervical cancer prevention screenings to 100 Developmental Disabilities provider staff in 5 regions of the state (Little Rock, Fort Smith/Fayetteville, Monticello/El Dorado, Hope and Jonesboro) by June 30, 2011. Women with developmental disabilities have typically been viewed as eternal infants and non-sexual beings. This view has decreased their access to appropriate pelvic and breast cancer prevention screenings.
Through the implementation of the activities recommended in this proposal, ADHP envisions increasing the number of successful breast and cervical cancer prevention screenings and decreasing the trauma of these screenings for women with developmental disabilities by educating women of the procedures and their necessity in a way they can understand and learn to take an active role in their healthcare. This education resulting in more successful and less traumatic prevention screenings will increase the compliance with the recommended screening guidelines resulting in early detection, diagnosis and treatment, decreasing morbidity and mortality and ultimately eliminating health disparities for women with disabilities in Arkansas.
ADHP is requesting $40,711.79 which will cover staff time, the coordination and delivery of the Women Be Healthy health intervention to 100 developmental disability provider staff in 5 regions around the state, as well as technical assistance supporting the disability providers in implementing the training for the individuals they serve.
