Project Description:
The Texas Center for Disability Studies will design and implement a center for military families caring for children with disabilities to enhance the capabilities of the these families to achieve their maximum potential. Project activities will be guided by an advisory committee consisting primarily of military family members who care for children with disabilities. Activities are designed to complement existing Ft. Hood services by providing additional family service components.
Each family served through the center will receive a family-centered assessment created using the Families Planning Together (FPT) process of best-practices for families to assess and plan supports and services important to the child with a disability and the supporting family. Systems Navigators, guides and family advocates certified in FPT, will assist the families in implementing the plan by accessing available military and civilian services. The project will adapt existing as well as create new materials that address specific issues facing military families caring for children with disabilities.
