Project Description:
In Oklahoma, there is a lack of preservice training for special education professionals in low incidence disabilities. The Oklahoma Special Education Teacher Registry Training is approved training in five federal criteria areas: autism, traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities, deaf/blindness and other health impairment. The Oklahoma UCEDD coordinates this project through a contract with the Oklahoma State Department of Education. The goal of the project has been to build capacity of schools to meet the unique needs of these students and their families. Over 2700 teachers have been trained. Because this inclusive model of training (inclusion of families and self advocates in the design, delivery and evaluation of the training) has been so highly rated, the model has been adopted by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in other training offerings through the State Systems Change Project for Transition and statewide paraprofessional training.
