Project Description:
Having a child with a disability can be stressful.
Some indicators of stress identified by recent research are sadness or distress upon discovery of a child's disability, interacting with multiple professionals, expense, restricted social activities, stigma from others, lack of support, isolation, guilt about not doing enough, and transitioning to adulthood.
This study will look at two ways to help lower stress and support parents. We plan to recruit 400 parents over the next year and a half beginning in January 2010. Meetings will be held at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, Vanderbilt 100 Oaks, or in other community venues. If you or your existing parent groups would like to take part, contact us.
