Project Description:
The purpose of the Community Service project is to work to involve more people with disabilities in national service programs like AmeriCorps and to promote inclusion of individuals with disabilities in community volunteer activities. A key component of the goals of AmeriCorps is the full and proactive inclusion of individuals with disabilities in programs. Membership enables individuals with disabilities to gain valuable experience and skills and allows areas served to benefit from the skills and experiences of persons with disabilities. The Coalition for Healthy Aging, a program of Vanderbilt Center for Health Services, involves AmeriCorps members in service to senior citizens in thirteen middle Tennessee counties. The VKC UCEDD has an AmeriCorps member with disabilities and provides training and service opportunities to other AmeriCorps members serving this project.
