One Stop Service Center Initiative
Project Description:
Individuals with disabilities represent approximately 45 million Americans. Despite passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Workforce Investment Act, and the Ticket to Work Act, the unemployment rate among individuals with disabilities has staggered around 70%. In Florida, only 23.2% of individuals with severe disabilities are employed. When nearly 7 out of 10 people with physical, cognitive, developmental, sensory and behavioral disabilities remain without jobs, it is imperative that the systems designed to provide services and supports to assist people in obtaining gainful employment are accessible and effective.
The purpose of the One Stop Service Center Initiative (OSSCI) is to address barriers to servicing individuals with disabilities at the One Stop Service Centers in Florida through research, collaboration, and education. Year one of the initiative will consist of information gathering relative to current One Stop Center services and related activities at both the state and national level and the preparation of a comprehensive report that will be utilized by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (funder) to initiate solutions to access barriers for individuals with disabilities who utilize One Stop Service Centers. Years two and three of the initiative will involve implementing report recommendations through training and technical assistance provided to three One Stop pilot sites.
This proposal and all activities contained within aligns with the mission and values of the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council by advocating opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities and their families to enrich their quality of life within their communities. This will be accomplished through efforts to improve access to One Stop Service Centers and all available services that will, in turn, enhance the independence, productivity, inclusion, and self-determination of individuals with developmental disabilities, and other disabilities, in employment and other facets of community life.
