FASD Screening Training & Consultation
Project Description:
This project provides training and technical assistance to enable eight diagnostic and intervention centers across the country to use the FAS Photographic Analysis Software to screen children and youth for FASD. The software is designed to measure the magnitude of expression of the key diagnostic facial features of FAS. It then scores the outcomes of these facial measures using the 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. The ultimate goal of this project is to further expand the capability of interdisciplinary teams across the country in screening, diagnosing, and intervention of children and youth for FASD.Training for this project is performed by FAS DPN faculty via video conference to professionals in remote sites. Training continues over two days and focuses on the use of the FAS Photographic Analysis Software. To use the software, the trainee takes and imports three digital facial photographs into the software program; documents pertinent identifying information; measures the key facial features using special image analysis tools; documents the presence of other facial anomalies; and documents the quality of the photos. During the training, participants are able to practice taking and analyzing photographs and receive feedback from the trainer on their analysis. Following the initial training session, technical assistance is provided by the trainer through email and scheduled telephone contact. Through this training and long term follow-up, the capacity of the participating programs to provide quality screening and diagnosis is greatly enhanced.
