Project Description:
The Fracture Prevention Study is a retrospective chart review study of adults with developmental disabilities who live in a large congregate care facility. People with developmental disabilities have many risk factors for increased fracture rates, including decreased bone density and increased falls. This study examines a clinical protocol that was initiated at the facility in an attempt to decrease fracture rates of the residents. The purpose is to describe the relationship between fracture rates and bone density of residents over time and the initiation of an osteoporosis prevention and treatment protocol at the facility. This is an opportunity to collect detailed data on how medications, mobility levels, disability diagnoses and other risk factors are related to fracture rates and bone density over time. These data will inform the design of future prospective research to test interventions to decrease fracture incidence in adults with developmental disabilities.
