Project Description:
The FAS Diagnostic & Prevention Network (FAS DPN) Clinic is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that includes a pediatrician, licensed clinical and school psychologists, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist, a family advocate and a maternal advocate. The FAS DPN Clinic provides FASD diagnostic evaluations for individuals of all ages (toddlers to adults) who have prenatal alcohol exposure. Two patients are evaluated each Friday, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Before coming to clinic, caregivers complete a questionnaire that documents the patient's developmental history, exposures, and the caregivers' concerns. Previous school, medical, and psychological evaluations are collected in preparation for the diagnostic evaluation. On the day of the evaluation, the caregivers are interviewed by a pediatrician and psychologist while the patient is administered a battery of assessments by the other psychologist, speech / language pathologist and occupational therapist. After the interview and clinical examination, the clinic team meets to derive the patient's FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code and establish referrals for treatment and services. The caregivers then meet with the clinic team to discuss the diagnosis and referrals. Caregivers participate as essential members of the team throughout the evaluation process. The clinical evaluation and discussion of the diagnosis and referrals takes approximately four hours.
