Spreading the Word: An Extension of the Disabling Bullet Project

Project Description:
During the last two decades, there has been a significant shift in the demographics of disability in the United States. With the rise of violence, the number of persons who have sustained a spinal cord injury as a result of gunshot trauma has increased dramatically. Despite representing an emerging disability group, demonstration projects that address the issues of individuals with violently-acquired spinal cord injuries (VASCI) are sparse. Demographic data indicate that they are, for the most part, young people of ethnic minority backgrounds. Many have dropped out of high school, lack employment experiences, and live in poverty. Spreading the Word: An Extension of the Disabling Bullet Project is a two year project that focuses on the needs of individuals with violence-related spinal cord injuries. This project utilizes peer-mentors to assist new patients with VASCI through issues related to rehabilitation, community integration, and independent living. Peer-mentors are young ethnic minority men with VASCI who have completed their rehabilitation and are leading positive and productive lives. With the support and guidance of a peer-mentor, the needs of young people with VASCI may be better addressed.
