Project Description:
This project will a) examine family issues of concern to people with disabilities, and b) develop and test an educational intervention for improviNg family support for adults with disabilities. To address deficiencies in the research literature, this project will: 1) Capture the perspectives of persons with disabilities as well as nondisabled family members 2)examine the impact of family relationships on the well-being of people with disabiliteis to balance the reverse focus of past empirical work. 3)Adopt a positive strengths approach to family relations, rather than a damage reducation approach 4)utilize a social model framework for understanding disability, rather than a medical or individualizing framework. 5)focus on adults with disabilities who are facing the challenges of living in the community 6)include two different disability groups: people with physical or mobility disabilities (visible); and people with chronic fatigue syndrome (nonvisible) 7)use qualitative in-depth methods in an expolratory phase as well as quantitative methods in an intervention study with control group comparison 8) include regional diversity over three sites in the US
