Project Description:
Self-Directed Support Corporations (also known as Microboards) are small nonprofit corporations established to provide supports and services to an individual with disabilities. This small corporation has the sole purpose to be the quasi-fiscal intermediary or direct provider (via RFP) for that one person. The board, comprised of friends and family members who are trusted by the individual, manages the individual?s supports and services, receives the funding, and assures that the funding is being appropriately used to provide the needed supports. The purpose and function of the board is to be person-centered, placing the person with a disability in a support network of people who believe in him/her and giving the individual and their family the maximum amount of choice and control over the supports needed. They may directly arrange services by hiring the staff needed, or they may contract with other entities to provide support. Regardless, the support is geared to the individual and their very specific needs. The Corporation is required to comply with appropriate standards, policies and regulations. A Self-Directed Support Corporation may be established for more than one person; however, we recommend a limit of a maximum of five individuals per Corporation to guarantee adequate management for all concerned. Self-Directed Support Corporations provide the opportunity to achieve the greatest level of choice and control to the individual with a disability and their family. This project will continue to work with the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs to ensure policies and procedures allow Self-Directed Support Corporations to work within the current system. Additionally, we will continue to work with other agencies, such as the Department of Health and Human Services, as needed to ensure that the funding can flow to the Self-Directed Support Corporation. Accomplishment of the proposed goals will result in four measurable and attainable outcomes: 1. Control of Plan of Supports 2. Control of the Budget supporting the Plan 3. Control of the staff providing supports 4. Control of the persons life
