Project Description:
This Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II application was funded to Danya International, Inc. (Danya), by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to continue the development of Caring for Caregivers: Supporting Caregivers of People With Autism Spectrum Disorders (CFC). CFC is an innovative, multimedia package designed for use by professionals and paraprofessionals who work with individuals providing care for someone with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Caregivers of individuals with ASDexperience high levels of emotional stress, anxiety, fear, and guilt; parents describe the impact of the ASD diagnosis as creating an overwhelming amount of stress on the family (Hutton & Caron, 2005). A large body of research emphasizes the value of stress reduction and coping skills in caregivers of persons with chronic illnesses and other mental disorders (Mittelman, 2005; Scott, Lewis, Loughlin, & Chambers, 2005). Currently, little of this research has been applied to caregivers of individuals with autism, despite the evidence that autism caregivers experience higher rates of stress than caregivers of individuals with other disabilities (Blacher & McIntyre, 2006; Boyd, 2002; Sharpley & Bitsika, 1997).
