Project Description:
The Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC) promotes literacy, social connectedness, and community inclusion for adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities. The premise is simple. A group of five to eight people with disabilities and a wide range of reading skills gather with two trained volunteer facilitators in a local bookstore or cafe (or similar community gathering place) to read aloud and discuss a book for one hour a week. Much like members of any other book club, NCBC members choose the book they want to read and how they would like to structure their club. Books in the NCBC library include adapted classic novels such as The Secret Garden and Treasure Island as well as current, popular literature. NCBC members are learning and making friends and having a lot of fun doing it! Objectives include: - To increase lifelong learning opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) - To increase meaningful literacy and social experiences for people with IDD - To increase the inclusion of people with IDD in community settings - To develop and disseminate a model program for literacy learning, social connectedness, and community inclusion Currently, there are over 175 individual book clubs (approx. 6 people with DD meeting weekly for 1 hour) operated by over 80 NCBC affiliates across the U.S., Canada, Germany, and Spain.
