South Carolina and Louisiana Community Development Project
Project Description:
The goal of the proposes project to train coalitions to field-test a unique community development model in 4 communties in 2 states (South Carolina and Louisiana)that will create and celebrate community connections for all citizens. The project's underlying premise is that all communties and all of their citizens have capacities and needs. Further, all citizens, including those with disabilities, must be leaders in building social capital for all of the community's citizens. The community development model discourages models that are designed only to increase the inclusiveness of citizens with disabilities. To address its goal, the project will (1) organize civic coalitions in 2 selected communites in each state, (2)idenify social captial assets, prority needs, and desired community outcomes, (3) implement individualized community development plans to reach desired outcomes, (4) monitor/evaluate the model/outcomes, and (5) nationally disseminate a manual illustraing the model/findings. The awardee for the proposed project is the Center for Disability Resources in South Carolina. However, the project will work collaboratively with the Human Development Center in Louisiana and both civic and disability organization in both states.
