Project Description:
ADHD RESEARCH The new ADHD program, directed by Julie Schweitzer, Ph.D., is in the unique position to offer both neuroscience research activities in ADHD and evidence based training and treatment models for ADHD throughout the lifespan. The program is partnering with the CEDD in its training, early identification, intervention and community outreach goals. The program offers training for residents and fellows in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics and Child Psychiatry covering the areas of detection and assessment of ADHD, behavioral intervention and methods for ascertaining medication effectiveness. Drs. Julie Schweitzer and Faye Dixon are the primary CEDD faculty for the ADHD program. This past year the program has tested 24 adults and 100 pediatric-aged participants involved in a variety of research studies. Funded studies under this program include an NIMH R01 to study compensatory brain functioning in ADHD; a M.I.N.D. Institute grant to study cognitive control via Event Related Potentials (ERP) methodology in adolescents; two UC Davis Clinical and Translational Services Center grants funded to study the effectiveness of knowledge transfer to parents, physicians and school staff to improve treatment compliance and implementation of evidence-based evaluation and treatment procedures with ADHD. In addition, a number of the program?s trainees and mentored faculty have been successful in acquiring grants to study a range of issues such as the effectiveness of telemedicine versus in vivo parent training; academic outcomes for adults with ADHD symptoms; and cognitive control and use of cues to affect brain processing in ADHD subtypes. One of Dr. Schweitzer?s mentees is also conducting a randomized-placebo controlled study on the effect of cognitive training in ADHD. Research findings have been presented in four professional and community forums this year, with 125 professionals and para-professionals and fifteen family members in attendance. Three journal articles have been published.
