Project Description:
The VA Deaf-Blind project maintains a registry of individuals who are deaf-blind ages birth to 22 years, which currently indicates there are at least 133 living in the state of Virginia. Over the last two years, the number of children in Virginia identified with deaf-blindness has increased by 35. As a result of the types, intensities and combinations of vision and hearing loss, and because 90% of the children who are identified as deaf-blind have additional disabilities, they comprise one of the most heterogeneous groups, and thus among the lowest incidences of children and young adults who receive services through early intervention and special education programs (killoran, 2007; Muller, 2006) The VA Project for Children and Youth with Dual Sensory Impairments/Deaf-Blindness is a statewide program designed to provide technical assistance, training, distance education, and networking information to families, service providers, and individuals birth through 21, who are deaf-blind/dual sensory impaired. A toll free number (877) 295-7799 and this interactive web site are available to families, service providers and others interested in obtaining and sharing information statewide. Basic demographic and statistical information is maintained on individuals (grant regulations-National Deaf-Blind Census), birth through 21 years old throughout the State to assist with identification of needs for program development, training and research. Project personnel work closely with State and local agencies to coordinate service delivery, disseminate information regarding optimal practice interventions and facilitate improved outcomes by children and youth who are deaf-blind.
