Project Description:
The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) Fellowship Program is aimed at strengthening and expanding the connections between persons with disabilities and their communities through increased inclusion in National and Community level service programs and projects. Being an active member of one?s community can hold for great benefits for individuals with and without disabilities. Participating in community level or national service projects can have a significant impact upon a person?s sense of self-worth and community connectedness. Contributing positively to one?s community can also empower a person as he or she pursues an independent, self-determined life. In addition, increasing the participation of persons with disabilities in national service projects provides a conduit for the fresh ideas and unique experiences that a more diverse service workforce can bring to all communities. The primary goals of the project include: ? Increase the Prospective Peer?s capacity for and awareness of National Service activity participation and its impact on both he and the community ? Identify and develop strategies to address any barriers to inclusion of the Prospective Peer in service and/or volunteer opportunities ? Work with the Developmental Disabilities Institute and the Michigan Community Service Commission to identify and address areas of need concerning universal design, inclusion and physical accessibility. Utilize existing training, or develop new training, to address these needs ? Develop a paper/case study outlining the entire experience of the Fellow Candidate and Prospective Peer with regard to the effectiveness of the strategies and training used to address issues of inclusion and universal design in relation to the participation of persons with disabilities in National Service and volunteer projects.
