Project Description:
The project will promote the health and well-being of young women with disabilities. We will develop a curriculum to train selected independent personal health skills such as cleanliness and grooming for young women with developmental disabilities to increase adaptive functioning and enhance independent living skills. To help prepare young women for community living and participation, personal health skills have been considered a critical characteristic of community adjustment and success. We will develop 6 modules to address personal health skills training such as cleanliness and personal grooming skills specifically for young women with developmental disabilities. We anticipate the young women will improve daily living skills specific to the needs of self help with skin care, hair care, nutrition and health, exercise and relaxation, and skills in appropriate clothing. This will be achieved by the participants attending 6 modules over the course of 6 months (to be repeated with new groups of participants for the remaining 6 months of the project). At the completion of the program each participant will have a wellness plan that is individualized and specific to their health and wellness needs.
