3.5 Project REDD - Research & Education in Disaster and Disability
Project Description:
Project REDD: Research and Education on Disability and Disaster, conducts basic research on the affects of disaster on individuals with disabilities, as well as evaluation research on projects that deliver direct services to these individuals. Project REDD has continued to conduct research on the affects of Hurricane Katrina on individuals with disabilities. Project REDD completed a mid-point evaluation of the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) participation in the Katrina Aid Today program, which has been disseminated by NDRN, KAT, as well as through the CCD at Texas A&M website. The design of this evaluation was originally funded in 2006 through a proposal competition overseen by AUCD. In April of 2008, NDRN requested that Dr. Stough assist with the final evaluation data from the KAT project. This data has been analyzed and the final evaluation report will be disseminated in July of 2008, pending final edits from NDRN.
Project REDD also received funding through an AUCD RTOI competition from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to investigate the long-term recovery of individuals with intellectual disabilities who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. The CDD is partnering with the Independent Living Resource Utilization (ILRU) at Memorial-Hermann in Houston and with the Utah State Center on Disability as part of this study. In collaboration with the Disaster Research Education Mentoring Program at Dartmouth College, Project REDD collaborates with other researchers exploring psychological constructs related to the affects of disaster. Project REDD also provides training for consumers and service providers to assist with disaster recovery.
Project REDD staff have presented research at professional conferences and workshops over the last year including at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the American Association of University Centers on Disabilities, and the Texas Hurricane Conference. Project REDD produces two resource guides; the Disaster Acronym Guide and the Texas Guide to supports and Services for Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families Affected by Disasters and disseminated over 6000 of these resources throughout the state as well as nationally to other organizations providing disaster-related services to individuals with disabilities. Project REDD also provides training for consumers and service providers to assist with disaster recovery, which have included workshops at the Texas Homeland Security Conference, the Texas Nursing Association, the Houston Voluntary Agencies for Disasters, the Brazos Valley Caregiver?s Association, and at the Voluntary Agencies on Disaster Texas State Conference. Project REDD maintains communication with the Texas Governors Office, Advocacy Inc., the Disability Policy Consortium, Texas Interagency Interfaith Disaster Response, Central Texas Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster, Gulf Coast Voluntary Agencies Active in Disaster, the University of Texas School of Social Work, the National Center on Post Traumatic Stress Disaster, the University of Texas Southwest Medical School, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, the Independent Living Research Utilization center at The Institution for Rehabilitation Research Memorial Hermann Hospital, and the American Association on Health and Disabilities as well as other organizations. Project REDD has established linkages with other UCEDDs who are also conducting research in this area including UCEDDs at the University of New Mexico, the University of Kansas, Utah State University, and the University of Wyoming.
