Project Description:
Objective 1.1: The purpose of this project is to increase both the quantity and quality of special education instructional specialists who work with students with low-incidence disabilities (LID). We have made significant progress in addressing both stated objectives of our project, and academic year 2007-2008 represents a truly outstanding year for our program since its initiative in 1998. We admitted a cohort of 12 students during summer 2007, bringing the total number of students in our 2007-2008 program to 37.The level of academic potential of our accepted students continues to be high: Students admitted for the fall semester of 2007 had an average GRE scores of 926 and average undergraduate GPAs of 3.38. All students graduating from our program must complete 39 total hours of study. As of June 2008 all the currently enrolled students have maintained at least a 3.0 graduate grade point average. Students who have begun their practicum, have either successfully completed a 135-hour experience or are in the process of finishing their hours. We are very satisfied with the quality of students currently enrolled in our program. We had 14 graduates from the program during 2007-2008. All of these graduates have accepted positions in school-based programs that included students with low incidence disabilities. To date, all of our graduates from the last two years have remained teaching in the field. Our Program Recruiter, Ms. Tiersa Hopkins, was essential in ensuring that we received applications from qualified applicants. Ms. Hopkins has used email flyers forwarded through public school administrators and brochures distributed at workshops and conferences as her primarily methods to disseminate information about our program. Ms. Hopkins meets with Dr. Stough on a biweekly basis to discuss recruitment and other program coordination issues. Given that our program has exceeded our targeted enrollment we believe our recruitment has been a resounding success. Our Program Coordinator, Marcia Montague, has provided contentious advisement to all each student in the program. This advisement has assisted in maximizing the educational experience for each LID student and ensuring that they make positive progress towards graduation.
