Project Description:
The Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders provides post-baccalaureate education to professionals in evidence-based practices related to including students with autism spectrum disorders in general education classes. Its philosophical foundation is that autism is a natural part of the human experience and that autism does not need to be cured. The program acknowledges that in order to lead a satisfying life in the community, people with autism may need a unique constellation of supports in the areas of learning, social relationships, communication, responsibible behavior and citizenship, and functional life skills. This program consists of 22 credits and coursework in: (a) contemporary issues in ASD, (b) medical aspects of ASD, (c) diagnosis, intervention, and supports; (d) assistive technology and augmentative communication; and (e) facilitation of social relationships. Individuals witih ASD and family members serve as instructors in the program and they are encouraged to enroll as part-time or full-time students. Courses are offered approximately one per semester on a schedule that is feasible for working professionals.
