Health Promotion and Disease Prevention For People Who Are Paralyzed
Project Description:
The Center for Development and Disability (CDD) of the University of New Mexico, in partnership with the Office of Disability and Health (ODH) of the New Mexico Department of Health will adapt, implement, evaluate, revise and disseminate a proven health promotion intervention targeted at people with paralysis. This partnership will sustain a strong and innovative program of health promotion, research, and capacity-building targeted at improving the health of people with paralysis, including:
1. Implementation of a proven health promotion intervention that has previously been pilot-tested and evaluated with people with disabilities, The Take Charge Challenge, with people with paralysis in New Mexico and Montana;
2. Innovative dissemination of training packages for this interventions including web-based training packages; and
3. Capacity building efforts within and outside New Mexico to ensure that the health promotion intervention is used by community-based organizations both during and after the grant period.
It is not enough to have the CDD ODH partnership simply develop, offer and evaluate the intervention during the grant period. To ensure that the intervention is sustained beyond the project period, project staff will produce complete training packages, including instructor?s manuals and course materials; use a variety of innovative means to publicize the interventions; offer train-the-trainer workshops on a regular basis; develop and make available a web-based version of the intervention; and provide support for materials to community-based facilitators not employed by the project. If project staff are successful, these interventions will be used on a continuing basis by a wide variety of well-trained, motivated facilitators from a wide variety of community-based agencies.
