Center:
Fiscal Year:
2007
Contact Information:
Project Description:
This study seeks to evaluate the status and prospects of people with ID in 12 nations. The study will reflect multiple dimensions of the lives of persons with intellectual disabilities in their societies: legal rights, opportunities, resources, social standing, social rights, protection from abuse and discrimination, across such domains as education, employment, health, social participation, government participation, sport participation, among other domains of national life. There are five core goals: 1. Identify and evaluate national-level indicators of the status of persons with intellectual disabilities from census systems, service registries, or specialized household surveys. 2. Identify the major gaps in national statistics on intellectual disability and evaluate the validity and reliability of existing data systems. 3. Integrate and interpret the data based on an organizing theme of equalization of opportunity within each of the selected countries. 4. Propose recommendations for improvement and expansion of international studies of the status and prospects of persons with intellectual disability. 5. Develop reports on the status and prospects of persons with intellectual disabilities for twelve countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Germany, India, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Japan, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, and the United States.
