Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Disability: An Exchange Program at the Abbey
Project Description:
The Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) is conducting a pilot project to design an international exchange program for undergraduate students with disabilities at Wayne State University (WSU). This exchange program would take place at The Abbey of Pontlevoy in France’s Loire Valley. There are approximately 800 students who have disabilities at WSU including those with psychological disabilities, learning disabilities, physical disabilities, cognitive disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, health impairments and language impairments. DDI proposes to partner with Educational Accessibility Services (EAS), WSU’s office for students with disabilities.
This project has the following objectives:
1) To develop a curriculum on cross-cultural perspectives on disability;
2) To determine the accessibility of The Abbey;
3) To determine the logistics of this program;
4) To build international partnerships;
5) To develop recruitment materials for WSU students with disabilities;
6) To identify and organize funding sources for WSU students with disabilities to participate in the exchange program.
