Project Description:
Neurobehavioral disorders are the largest group of conditions in the health care of children in developed countries today. Many neurobehavioral conditions such as autism and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorders appear to be increasing in number. Adult onset neurobehavioral disorders are also becoming increasingly identified. These conditions require disproportionately large amounts of resources for families and practitioners in their care and management. The genetic basis of these conditions have recently come to light. Large amounts of new information about the molecular pathogenesis of these conditions have been published over the past few years. Pioneering work in therapeutics targeted to work at the basic molecular defect of these conditions has begun. The goal of the program is to increase existing basic science research in behavioral genetics and to implement transitional research / therapeutics in behavioral genetics. The program will interface with other on-going areas of program development to enhance the link between the comprehensive clinical services already available at MMI and the existing basic science activities.
