Low Incidence Disabilities Masters Program
Project Description:
The purpose of this project is to increase the quantity and quality of special educators and transition specialists who work with students with low-incidence disabilities (LID). Our program uses a unique approach toward meeting the educational needs of students with low-incidence disabilities. Public Law 101-476 states that students with disabilities must receive both special education instruction and transition services; however, there is little evidence to suggest that educators work collaboratively to meet the educational and transition needs of students with disabilities. A comprehensive, appropriate public education for students with disabilities that also complies with federal guidelines exists only when special educators and transition specialists combine efforts. Few professional preparation programs use an interdisciplinary approach to train personnel to provide services to students with low-incidence disabilities. We are addressing this issue by implementing an interdisciplinary Master's program designed to train both special educators and transition specialists to work with students with low incidence didabilities. The two branches of our program are as follows:
1. Master's degree program in Education Psychology focusing on school-based services, which we refer to as the Instruction Specialist Program.
2. Master"s degree program in Educational Psychology focusing on career and transition to work issues for secondary students, which we refer to as the Transition Specialist Program.
We accept a total of 12 students per year and expect to train a toal of 58 students over the five year period of the grant.
