Ableism is a form of oppression with pernicious consequences for people who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Speechism is the prejudice and discrimination of people because their language or mode of expression is deemed inferior. In this paper, an AAC user explains how Ableism and Speechism impacts people who use AAC and then gives suggestions on how these cultural trends can be prevented or upended.
