From Curiosity to Career: Aggie ACHIEVE Student Thrives in IT Internship

April 20, 2026

Cole Pickett, a junior in the Aggie ACHIEVE program at Texas A&M University, is turning a lifelong interest in computers into real-world experience through a new internship with the College of Education and Human Development Technology Services department. As a student trainee, he is gaining hands-on skills while building confidence in a professional setting.

His passion for technology started early. “I’ve always been fascinated by computers since I was young,” he shared. Outside of work and school, he enjoys spending time with his dog and watching sports like football, baseball, and hockey with his family.

In his internship, Cole is exploring the technical side of IT by identifying cables and ports and shadowing team members to learn new skills. One of his favorite experiences has been taking apart a computer and learning about its components. He has also learned how to use a ticketing system to communicate and respond to requests in a professional format.

Beyond technical skills, the internship has helped him grow in communication, note-taking, and independence. “Communication was challenging at first,” he explained, “but being in an environment where it’s necessary has really helped me improve.”

The supportive team environment has played a key role in his success. Cole described the IT department as a “group effort,” where he can work independently while still receiving guidance. His supervisor, Emilio Alvarado, does an amazing job of breaking tasks into manageable steps, which helps Cole stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Looking ahead, Cole hopes to become an IT tech support professional and plans to work toward earning a CompTIA certification. He is also interested in continuing to build his skills, especially in coding.

His advice to other Aggie ACHIEVE students: “Take your time and don’t try to rush it. There’s a lot to learn.” Through this experience, he has learned that taking things one step at a time, especially with ADHD, helps him succeed. With growing confidence and technical skills, Cole is well on his way to a successful career in IT.
