This week is the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a US federal law that guarantees children with disabilities a free, appropriate public education.
On the latest episode of Disability Policy for All, AUCD Senior Advocacy Specialist Liz Weintraub speaks with Stephanie Smith Lee, Co-Director of Policy and Advocacy at the National Down Syndrome Congress and former OSEP Director at the U.S. Department of Education.
They talk about what is happening inside the Department of Education right now, what it means for students with disabilities, and why the 50th anniversary of IDEA matters more than ever. Stephanie breaks down OSERS, OCR, and the role the department plays in keeping IDEA’s promises alive.
