Center on Disability and Development's Aimee Day and Her Son Ty Day Speak in Minneapolis

October 24, 2025

At the International Gathering of the Learning Community for Person-Centered Practices in Minneapolis, keynote presenters Ty Day, self-advocate and empowerment speaker, and his mother Aimee Ortiz-Day, Director of Person-Centered Programs and Family Outreach at the Center on Disability and Development, presented “Let Go of My Hand, I Can Do This on My Own!”

Ty shared his experience growing up with well-meaning adults focused on safety, so much so that it limited his independence. Together, Aimee and Ty discussed how Person-Centered Thinking transformed their relationship, shifting from control to trust and empowerment. This change opened the door to meaningful conversations about risk and growth, allowing Ty to build confidence through real-life experiences.

 “Ty and Aimee were great.

We appreciate Ty sharing his stories, he is very articulate.”

“Wonderful sharing of personal experiences.

Great ideas for helping students navigate IEP teams.”

“So great to hear both Aimee & Ty’s perspectives and their growth.

I like the ability to learn from both a mom and her son’s perspective.”

In the past year, we have provided presentations and training at ESC Region 16, ESC Region 14, ESC Region 9, Klein ISD’s Empowerability Fair, the Parent to Parent Statewide Conference, and the Texas Transition Conference.
