It is a privilege to highlight Anna, a student whose recent growth reminds us all why transition and career readiness programs are so vital.
For much of her academic career, Anna has navigated the challenges of selective mutism. This often created significant barriers for her, making it difficult to engage in her coursework or connect socially with her peers. However, this past summer marked a major turning point in Anna’s journey.
A Summer of Transformation
Through the program, Anna was placed in a summer employment position at a local animal shelter. Understanding the unique challenges Anna faced, our program coordinator met with the employer beforehand to ensure they were prepared to support a student who might not communicate verbally.
What happened next was nothing short of remarkable:
- The Two-Week Turnaround: During a routine job-site visit just two weeks into the program, the coordinator discovered Anna wasn't just working—she was thriving. She was interacting naturally with the staff and speaking comfortably with her colleagues.
- Finding Her Voice: The supportive, low-pressure environment of the animal shelter allowed Anna to build the confidence she needed to break through her silence.
Bringing Success Back to the Classroom
The most inspiring part of Anna’s story is how this "summer win" has translated into her daily life at school. Since returning this fall, Anna has undergone a complete transformation:
