AAIDD Research Interest Network Inclusive Research Minigrant Overview

Purpose:

  • To increase the feasibility of conducting inclusive research by providing financial support
  • for related costs. To support researchers to collaboratively plan inclusive research and to support inclusive research.

Inclusive Research:

We define inclusive research as active involvement of research team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities across different stages of the research process. This is distinct from only including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as research participants.

Description:

The AAIDD Research Interest Network Inclusive Research Scholarship program intends to award one $500 minigrant each cycle. Funds will be presented to the lead applicant tocompensate research team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities for their time spent on research activities and to cover other related research activities.

Eligibility:

  • A researcher with lived experience of IDD or student researcher at dissertation proposal stage or later.
  • The research must use an inclusive research approach.

Funds can be spent on:

  • Compensation for research team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Materials and technology that supports research team member engagement in research tasks (e.g., team meetings, data collection, data analysis, dissemination).
    • A maximum of $100 can be spent on food-related items.
  • Travel/transportation for research activities.
  • A maximum of $200 can be spent on travel for research dissemination for team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • A maximum of $200 can be spent on training or professional development for team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities).

Funds cannot be spent on:

  • Participant incentives (however, your overall budget should demonstrate that these have been considered, as the disability community asserts that incentives demonstrate respect for their time and expertise).
  • Data collection resources/tools (e.g., audio recorders, standardized assessments).
  • Data analysis resources/tools (e.g., statistical software).
  • Training or professional development for an applicant without intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Open-access publication fees.
  • Travel for dissemination for researchers without intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Other:

  • Recipients must present their work at the AAIDD SECP Research Colloquium within the first 2 years following their award.
